FAQ

→ What is the purpose of a hackathon?

A hackathon is a 24-48 hour coding event where you collaborate with other people to create prototype implementations. It might seem like a very short period of time, but the ultimate goal is not to have a finished and polished product at the end, but to meet like-minded people and form teams that can help your projects/ideas be properly developed after the event.

→ What can I build at Hack Cyprus 2012?

In short, anything you feel like. It's the perfect opportunity to get together with other people and work on your ideas. It might be a mobile app, a realtime web app, a hardware hack, a multiplayer game, an education tool, a music tool, you name it. Find a problem that exists around you and solve it through code!

→ What technologies can I use?

Again, anything. We are not putting any restrictions on programming languages or technologies because we want people to be as productive as possible. We've invited some companies to offer their tools and APIs for free for you to use during the event, so be sure to check them out. Some of them will also be doing workshops on Saturday. You can also bring your own tools to use during the event - Arduinos, Rasberry Pis, Kinects, microcontrollers, rockets, nuclear reactors, whatever you need to build awesome things.

→ What will you provide during the event?

We will provide internet and power, water, ice, coffee, cereal, snacks, fruits, energy drinks and plenty of food. We'll also have lots of stickers and general swag from our sponsors. You have to bring your own laptop, power cable and sleeping apparel if you wish take a nap during the night.

→ I have an idea for a killer new app. How do I pitch it?

We've allocated 30 minutes for idea pitching at 11:30 on Saturday. If you wish to pitch your idea you should prepare an "elevator" pitch (maximum 2 minutes) explaining it in as much detail as possible and then present it during that period. You can them form a team to work on it after the pitching is finished.

→ What if I am not a developer? Can I still pitch my idea?

Sure! In fact, Hack Cyprus 2012 is the perfect place for you. You can meet developers and designers with whom you can partner, create a team and develop a prototype of your idea.

→ I already have a team or an existing project I want to work on. Is that okay?

Yes, of course. If you know what you want to work on, you can start hacking as soon as the pitching finishes (around 12:00).
